Transferable skills are skills developed through experiences, education and activities that can be applied across different jobs or industries. These skills can often be applied in multiple contexts, and regardless of the subject matter or context, can be “transferred” into a new arena.


Transferable skills can be identified as either hard or soft skills, where hard skills are technical, measurable, and job-specific abilities that can be learned through training or experience and soft skills are interpersonal and behavioural traits that help you work well with others and adapt to new situations.


Examples of Hard Transferable Skills:

  • Data Analysis: Working with spreadsheets, databases, or coding
  • Project Management: Planning, budgeting, and using tools like Asana or Trello
  • Technical Writing: Writing reports, manuals, or documentation
  • Marketing & SEO: Social media management, content writing, and SEO optimization
  • Customer Support Tools: Using CRM software (e.g., Salesforce, Zendesk)
  • Language Skills: Fluency in multiple languages
  • Software Proficiency: Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, programming languages


Examples of Soft Transferable Skills:

  • Communication: Writing, public speaking, and active listening
  • Adaptability: Handling change, learning new skills quickly
  • Problem-Solving: Thinking critically and making decisions under pressure
  • Teamwork: Collaborating with colleagues and resolving conflicts
  • Leadership: Motivating teams, delegating, and mentoring others
  • Time Management: Prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines
  • Creativity: Thinking outside the box, coming up with new solutions


Hard skills demonstrate that you can do the job and soft skills demonstrate that you can work well in different environments.

  • Boosting Your Resume – Highlighting these skills makes you a strong candidate even if your background is different

As the world of work continues to change rapidly it is helpful to know that you can change track if you need to.
