Psychological Therapy
Our psychologists provide evidence-based cognitive and behavioural strategies to help you with emotion regulation and mental health concerns. The most common way people access a psychologist in Australia is via a Mental Health Care Plan referral, completed by your General Practitioner (GP), for treatment consisting of Focused Psychological Strategies.
Focused Psychological Strategies are specific mental healthcare treatments based on evidence-based psychological therapies. These strategies are skills and behavioural based interventions to assist in the development of emotion regulation skills and reducing of the severity of mental health symptoms.
These short term strategies include the following:
- Psycho-education
- Cognitive-behavioural therapy
- Relaxation strategies
- Problem solving skills and training
- Anger management
- Social skills training
- Communication training
- Stress management
- Parent management training
- Interpersonal therapy
- Eye-Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR)
To access psychological therapy as subsidised by medicare a GP referral is required prior to your first appointment. The Australian Government currently provides for a maximum of 10 Government sessions per year with a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan, with a review when clinically necessary or at the completion of 6 sessions. Your private health insurer may also provide a rebate depending on your level of cover.
Other therapies such as Gestalt Psychotherapy and Psychodynamic (psychoanalytic) Psychotherapy are not included in the Medicare subsidised provisions. These are long-term psycho-therapeutic techniques which assist clients to gain insights into their subconscious mind with the intention of creating motivation for behaviour change. For this type of longer term therapy, private health insurance can assist to subsidise the cost of treatment.
