Personality Assessments

Personality assessments are tools designed to measure aspects of an individual's character, temperament, and behavioral tendencies. They are used in psychology, career counselling, organisational settings, and personal development to gain insights into personality traits, preferences, and potential behaviours that are likely to be acted out in the workplace, in educational settings and also within relationships.

There are a number of different types of personality assessments and these can include self-report questionnaires, where individuals answer questions about their own behaviours, feelings, and thoughts, projective tests, where individuals are presented with ambigious stimuli with the aim of eliciting unconscious aspects of personality, and situational judgement tests or behavioural assessments where reactions are measured to hypothetical or real life situations, such as multiple mini interviews to evaluate decision-making, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills often applied in medicine, healthcare, education, customer service, law enforcement and defence.

Personality assessments are tailored to purpose, and not all are created equal. The Big Five Model of Personality is backed by decades of research in psychology, cross-cultural studies, and neuroscience, structuring personality into 5 dimensions including Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism with consistent valid and reliable results. The Minnesota Mulitphasic Personality Inventory is highly validated for clinical and psychological assessment. The Myers Briggs Type Indicator is highly popular in workplaces but lacks strong predictive validity and test-retest reliability, which means it is a poor predictor of future outcomes and when it is repeated a number of times is often inconsistent. The Hogan Personality Assessments are backed by decades of research in industrial-organisational psychology, has strong consistency with strong test retest reliability and is widely used by Fortune 500 companies and executive coaches.
